Bringing Prosperity to Business: Success from Making the Switch to Solar

Categories: Awards

Today, homeowners are not the only consumers who are taking advantage of the outstanding benefits that solar energy has to offer. With the growing capacity of solar, more businesses and corporations have chosen to make the switch. Larger companies have made the commitment to sustainable efforts and are showing great success from their decision; these corporations include, Walmart, Prologis, Apple, Costco’s, Kohl’s, Ikea, Macy’s, and Target. These well-known companies are an inspiration to future businesses to show their dedication to a thriving, sustainable future. According to the Solar Industries Association (SEIA), Target holds the number one spot for businesses that have gone solar.

Target now has an outstanding 147.5 megawatts of solar panel installations, which is more than any other retailer. The company believes in educating consumers and employees about the importance of environmental conservation and diminishing greenhouse gas emissions. Each year, they record their company’s carbon emissions through their Carbon Disclosure Project. They are also in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Greenchill Program. The EPA created the Greenchill Program to focus on reducing refrigeration emissions. In addition to Target, other businesses are showing their devotion to fighting climate change. Walmart is close behind the number one spot and are moving towards their goal to eliminate 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gases from their supply chain. Apple is another company working to expand conservation efforts by helping their suppliers to bring 4 billion watts of renewable power online by 2020. Ikea set their target in 2013 to make 70% of their operations renewable within the next seven years.

These retail industry leaders are using their well-known reputation to promote and contribute to the reduction of climate change. In the SEIA’s report, installations in 38 states as well as in Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico were found and nearly 1,100 megawatts of solar energy arrays in United States’ top solar companies were tracked. Solar energy is a great addition to a large corporation because the panels can support the multiple locations of a business. However, solar energy is equally as great for any sized business with the profitability gained from switching to solar alone. Along with this, switching a business to solar creates marketability for consumers who are intrigued by the sustainability efforts of the company. Substantial businesses, like Target and Walmart, are already seeing the great success of the what solar energy can do for their company’s overall prosperity.
